In “Kai Yuan”, players are immersed in a first-person puzzle-solving adventure, embodying a young monk tasked with thwarting ancient evil spirits at the brink of escape from Kai Yuan Temple. Armed with a unique power to shrink, granted by his master, the player navigates through tight spaces and deciphers small runes to repair three mystical seals hidden within the temple. This core mechanic not only challenges players to utilize the monk's ability to alter his size for exploring narrow areas and solving puzzles but also to collect and strategically place essential items to restore the seals and secure the world's safety. Set against the backdrop of beautifully rendered temple environments, this game merges mystery, strategy, and exploration into a captivating, singular paragraph narrative, offering an engaging and innovative gameplay experience that tests both wit and courage.

ProcessOur team comprised two level designers, each with a distinct focus. My role involved the design and construction of the main level, where players are immersed in the game's primary challenges and narrative. My teammate, on the other hand, was tasked with creating the demo level. This introductory level serves as a tutorial space where players are acquainted with the game's mechanics, laying the groundwork for the gameplay experience that unfolds in the main level.

In the main level, the objective is for players to gather keys that unlock doors, granting access to previously inaccessible areas where ornaments are hidden. The level design includes a first floor and a second-floor balcony. Notably, while two ornaments are located on the first floor, players must first gain access to the second floor before they can enter the rooms on the first floor, adding a layer of strategy and dynamism to the space. Additionally, the level is peppered with various obstacles that challenge players to utilize one of the game's core mechanics: changing their size. In addition to my responsibilities in level design, I also took on the role of creating 2D assets for the game. Utilizing both Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, I crafted various elements crucial to the game's visual and interactive experience. Among these creations were the reel and the infrared boundary, each designed with attention to detail and functionality to enhance the overall gameplay and aesthetic appeal. These tools allowed me to bring precision and creativity to the assets, contributing significantly to the game's immersive environment.
